White Tara

The Goddess of Longevity, Healing, and Compassion

Who is White Tara?

White Tara (Sanskrit: Sitatārā, Tibetan: སྒྲོལ་དཀར་, Drolkar) is a beloved female bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism, revered as the embodiment of compassion, long life, and serenity. She is one of the 21 manifestations of Tara, the “Mother of Liberation,” and is especially associated with protection from illness and premature death.

White Tara’s compassion is deeply maternal — she not only hears the cries of the suffering, but also nurtures them with healing energy and protective blessings.

Symbolism and Iconography

  • Color: Pure white (symbolizing purity, truth, and the healing light of compassion)
  • Eyes: Seven eyes — three on her face, and one on each palm and foot — symbolizing her ability to see the suffering of all beings and respond instantly
